When we bought our 1920’s home over 2 years ago, everything was painted a builders-grade cream and the kitchen & bathrooms were definitely stuck in 2001. Since then, we have painted and repainted, styled and re-styled, started projects and put projects on hold, and put many, many hours into updating everything. We still have a long way to go, but one room I’m happy to say is finally complete is our living room!
Since my style tends to be on the eclectic side (hence the name!), it took us a while to figure out what we wanted to do with our living room. I love a lot of different design styles, so we found ourselves playing the game of – do we want it to be more colorful or neutral, modern or vintage, rustic or clean – it’s hard to choose because I love them all in their own way! So, after a lot of time deliberating, we finally pulled the trigger and decided to create a living room that has a mix of modern, vintage, and rustic elements, with a white, black, mixed-metal and wood color palette.
Once we decided on the direction we wanted to go in, we started by giving our walls a fresh coat of white paint (more like 3 coats of white paint!) and then we were finally ready to have some fun and began the process of putting it all together. We placed our furniture and then moved on to hanging art. I used a mix of my own photography, modern prints I have acquired over the years, and family photos to make the room feel personal. We not only utilized wall space when hanging our artwork, we utilize floor space as well, by simply sitting a few selected pieces in the floor and leaning them up against the wall.
After we had our art in place, it was time to start placing our decor and really pulling everything together. We used some pieces we already had, but also wanted to purchase some new things to make the room feel fresh. We didn’t have a huge budget and I am definitely a thrifty girl so, Target, Homegoods, World Market, Ikea, Urban Outfitters, and Rugs USA were my go tos. We found a lot of great deals and really focused on finding pieces that would add to the room and in the end we really love the way it all came together. We love spending time in our living room and think it’s not only comfortable, it’s perfect for us.
